The Dynamic Duo: Zinc and Copper for Optimal Health
Zinc and copper may be trace minerals, but their impact on your health is anything but small. These essential nutrients play a critical role in numerous bodily functions: zinc supports immune health, wound healing, and DNA synthesis, while copper is vital for energy production, brain function, and iron metabolism. Zinc is involved in approximately 300 different metabolic reactions, second only to magnesium.
However, here’s the catch—balance is key. Zinc and copper work in tandem, and too much of one can deplete the other, leading to deficiencies. Unfortunately, most people are deficient in both due to modern diets lacking nutrient-dense foods like shellfish, seeds, and organ meats. Of course, most foods are very low in zinc because the soil is depleted, something we’ve known for almost a century. Worse yet, high zinc supplementation without copper can exacerbate the problem.
